Description / DALI PHANTOM S-180 In-Wall Speaker
Full-size loudspeaker with room filling sound the DALI S-180
Dali’s Phantom S-180 is a full size in wall loudspeaker that can be hidden away using an aesthetically pleasing white paintable grille. Not only do the speakers effortlessly blend into your decor, but they also take up little of your valuable living space. With their compact design, the S-180 features renowned speaker technologies including Dali’s characteristic wood fibre cones, low-loss rubber surround and their superior innovative magnetic design with a SMC pole piece.
Dali have optimised the primary 8” wood fibre woofer for both bass and mid-range performance. To enhance the bass performance, Dali have paired the primary woofer with a 10” passive carbon fibre radiator. This ensures that the PHANTOM S-180 really stands out from the crowd.
Key features of the Phantom S-180

WIDE DISPERSION
All speakers by DALI are designed around the principle of wide dispersion. This entails an off-axis optimisation of the audio reproduction. The technology is perfect for use in install speakers, since they are always mounted flush against either a wall or ceiling.

SLIM CABINET
One of their goals for the PHANTOM S and M models was to create high-end in-wall speakers with a slim profile that allowed for maximum flexibility when installed. This was achieved by keeping the cabinet depths at only 100-103 mm, which fits into almost any standard wall.

SMC TECHNOLOGY
Advanced Soft Magnetic Compound (SMC), which eliminates variation of flux strength in the magnet gap. It reduces distortion to a minimum compared to conventional drivers.

10" PASSIVE RADIATOR
Dali Phantom S-180 In-Wall Speaker features a 10" passive bass reflex woofer made of very well behaving carbon fibre - taken from their highend subwoofer 'DALI SUB P-10 DSS'.

WOOFER
The specially developed primary 8” woofer used in the PHANTOM S-180 was designed and optimized for both bass and midrange performance. We chose to base the core of the woofer on the SMC magnet system developed for the EPICON range. SMC was chosen for its unique ability of dramatically lowering the level of distortion.
Offering 70% more surface area, the 8” woofer is able to move more air and deliver a higher sound pressure at very low frequencies compared to a traditional 6½” woofer. All this whilst still delivering detailed information, rich midrange sound and a full frequency response as of a traditional floorstanding speaker.
To ensure the best possible bass performance in the PHANTOM S-180, we integrated a 10" passive bass reflex woofer - based on the passive radiator used in our highend subwoofer 'DALI SUB P-10 DSS'.
By also using the same aluminium chassis, soft surround and very well behaving carbon fibre cone, the passive radiator lets the PHANTOM S-180 reach deep down into the true lower frequencies to deliver a believable large boxed speaker sound. But in a very slim cabinet.
TWEETER
The rotatable hybrid tweeter module in the PHANTOM S-180 is the perfect high frequency solution, as it combines a soft dome tweeter with a ribbon tweeter. This ensures an amazing rendering and dispersion of the high frequencies that outperforms other tweeter technologies.
Both the soft dome and the ribbon tweeter are free of artefacts - e.g. resonances and high Q peaks - within their working range. The hybrid tweeter module features an extremely smooth and wide horizontal dispersion - one of our sound design trademarks. Even the detailing of the faceplate for the tweeter module is designed for optimal horizontal dispersion.
The characteristics of the soft dome tweeter are low resonance frequency, high power handling, extreme excursions, and exceptional headroom for high sound pressure levels.
The magneto-static ribbon tweeter trademark is being a true master in horizontal distribution of high frequencies, and a superb partner for the soft dome tweeter’s unique ability to reproduce frequencies from 2 kHz upwards.

CABINET & PLACEMENT
The compact design of the PHANTOM S-180 fits into most standard walls. It was a challenge constructing such a shallow back cabinet - only 103 mm deep - with such a small footprint, and still achieving the perfect inner volume for the woofer.
The cabinet is constructed from a solid MDF that holds the easy-to-use dogleg mounting system and the terminals. The front of the PHANTOM S-180 integrates elegantly with the wall via the surrounding extruded aluminium frame, and the magnet mounted front grille forms the visual presence of the PHANTOM S series.
When installing the PHANTOM speaker in your wall, the ribbon tweeter should be placed at ear height. To make this easier, we decided to turn the driver placement 'upside down'. This allows for a more traditional mounting height in line with the TV - instead of below the TV.
We also turned the hybrid tweeter module on its head to keep the dome tweeter close to the midrange woofer. This ensures an optimum handover from the woofer to the part of the tweeter that handles the lowest frequencies. The physical distance between these drivers are optimised for the best summation of the woofer and tweeter output.
Mounted like this, we experienced that both the integration with the room - mainly with the floor - and the bass performance improved.
When mounting the PHANTOM S-180 horizontally as a centre channel, make sure to place the ribbon tweeter as close to ear height as possible. This is due to the dispersion qualities of the ribbon. Being a master of high frequency dispersion on the linear plane, it is less able to spread the high frequencies on the vertical plane. This is where the dome tweeter excels and why the dome should be placed lower than the ribbon in this scenario.
